Ah, thanks for the hint! This was a combined HTML+Plaintext mail,

(Content-Type: multipart/alternative + Content-Type: text/plain; +
Content-Type: text/html;)

Yes. If you want HTML or combined HTML+plaintext mail, always stick to
PGP/MIME. There may be mail clients which cannot cope with this, but
they're on retreat ;-)
