There is a way to configure Thunderbird to store the temporary email
drafts to another location other than in your email account.  Perhaps
this would be and imperfect work-around of the issue:

Go to Tools > Account Settings [of the account of interest] > Copies and
Folders > Keep message drafts on > select Local Folders (instead of the
name of your email account).  I assume that would prevent the drafts
from going to the email server since they would be stored locally instead.

The downside to this work around is that you would not be able to begin
a draft email on one of your local computers and then finish it from
another computer, thus defeating one of the benefits of IMAP email servers.
