However, then I accidentally nuked my system, and when I rebuilt winter, I never could get the fonts to look decent when anti-aliased...

Second that...frankly some fonts are better left aliased with freetype1.
ft1 does anti-aliasing... it does in e16 and e15.... :)
I know...that was just a nice way to say that ft1's anti-aliasing sucks :)
I was working on rephorm's winter theme and after trying some fonts anti-aliased I gave up and returned to an aliased font because it just looked better.
