Hi all,

i just joined the list (Hello everyone ;) and had originally intended
not to post too much too early, but just coming from outside of the
community, I think I have something useful to contribute here.

I second Thomas' post. My impression is that e is actually quite
widely known as a lightweight window manger with hedonic qualities
exceeding the mainstream. I think most people in the target audience
have heard of it. The website does a great job on communicating the
artistic spirit of e (in practice I think this means e17) though its
design and graphics. But at the same time, it advises people not to
use it because it's not stable, and it introduces visitors to a lot of
abstraction by telling them about all the visions that are behind it
(desktop shell etc), all of which require a great deal of
interpretation of the yet-to-be enlightened.

While I totally agree, I think people get hooked better on e if they
could actually go on trying e17. I personally wanted to try it for I
think 4 years now, but it was just so much easier to '$ sudo apt-get
install xfce4' on my box, so I didn't bother.

I think a great share of the potential users and contributers are
running Ubuntu. What do you think about the idea of just maintaining a
ubuntu repo like wicd[1] does? You could put a warning in the
installer, say it is unstable, pre-alpha and likely to insult the
users mother. But It will get e out to a lot of people who might get
impressed by the eyecandy and the clean architecture, and maybe also
so annoyed by bugs and missing features that they might report or even
fix them. It is just a question of lowering the entrance barrier. I
think OzOs [2] have most of what is needed for this in place.

I hope this is of any use. If there is any naive short-circuiting in
my reasoning, please tell me and keep in mind that I have only been
using e17 and looking into efl for short time, and that I am only
writing this in the hope that an external point of view is helpful.
