Isn't there a key-combination that switches you to a terminal, alt+F1 or something? This is what I used to do to trouble shoot my E-16.5 installation. The output on the terminal would show me the errors occurring in real-time so i could get a direction to go in for a fix. My problem was always my libpng version. Check to see if yours is compatible.
