Thats what I ended up doing and that solved the problem.  I believe I
was experiencing library version conflicts rather than any problems
with my video card.

I also ended up just turning off xdm/gdm rather than fighting it for
different sessions.  I did finally find out how to mangle it by
putting a script in /etc/X11/gdm/Sessions and calling it
enlightenment.
