Well, it does print
DejaVu Sans:style=Bold
(among lots of other lines), and I have 
font-border             "DejaVu Sans-10:Bold"
in ~/.e16/fonts.cfg . I suspect some Gentoo customization (not necessarily in 
E16) - perhaps I should try installing Enlightenment from source...
