Personally, Id like to see it become a module. I would think that you could make it load and use the background container to update the images. This would make for easier integration and more instantly configurable options. Not all modules are just desktop gadgets, so im certain this is completely feasable. If youre not savvy on E modules, theres the Skel module you can use as a base to start tinkering with.
