yeah. ~/.Xdefaults (or .Xresources - same thing). xrdb -load .Xdefaults on
login or whenever u update. e17 has an option to do this for u.

you can convert all these to lines in your .Xdefaults and save fat cmdlines :)

it probably should just dim the bg anyway. it'd look rather horrid with
darkened blocks around chars. reality is that the bg should be carefully
designed/selected to work will wiuth what is going to be on top. if what is on
top is to be light text, then ensure the bg is dark, and vice-versa.
