Ernie, do you know when that 8.02code is going to be available. The
ability to do remote mirrors is an awesome feature. I have a new remote
site coming up with S's and K's and would really like to be able to
leverage that feature. Also, is that code really going to be available
for the N's? I thought they were at the point where no knew features
would be available.

Thanks,

Mike

Some words of caution about the RMON capture feature. On these flow
based switches (N/S/K) we must disable hardware based switching and
move the packets thru the soft path on any port were the feature is
configured. This is fine for a user port but presents a bandwidth and
frame rate bottle neck that may result in packet loss. You need to
access how busy the port is before enabling it.

Regarding configuration of RMON capture - The CLI represents the
underlying MIB implementation which is a bit cryptic. I believe
netsight has a user interface that makes the feature easier to manage.

In N/S/K 8.02 due out soon (8.01 already if you bought our new SSAs or
S140 cards) we offer a new remote mirror capability. I think everyone
will really like this. You can configure a l2GRE tunnel that
effectively attaches itself to the mirror destination port. The
mirrored data can then be routed or switched to the designated tunnel
destination. Configure a tunnel that ends at your wireshark PC's IP
address and the mirrored traffic starts arriving there. I need to
double check a few details regarding MTU discovery on the tunneled data
vs the need to jumbo enable ports. I will reply when I have those
details.

Very cool! I'm blown away.

You got me looking into RMON packet capture now. I try to setup a
capture and it tells me "Error creating filter". Looks like I should be
able to setup a packet capture but I can't. Building a filter is pretty
straight forward so I don't see what I am missing. Documentation says
that NS will try to enable RMON on the switch if it is not already. I
logged into the switch and don't see a command for enabling RMON but I
do have RMON commands so I believe the switch is capable.

Hi Guys,

Have you looked at RMON history? The default is a 30 minute window but
it is configurable if you must have 1 and 5 minute intervals.

The CLI command is "show rmon history <port#>"

I too have asked about this functionality in the CLI and
Enterasys points to NetSight BUT the times that this capability is the
most important is when communications from NetSight may not be possible
due to yuckness on the switch/network. On non-Enterasys switches, this
has been very helpful to locate a source port of "junk" (extreme traffic
or errors) that was dragging a switch down. You find the port, disable
it and work on finding the real source of the problem while most of the
users are become happy quicker on a now working switch stack.

Just a plug that it would still be a very useful feature that is
implemented on many other brands. Don't get me wrong, we love our
Enterasys switches and there are many things done the way we like.

        Hi,

if you use NetSight console, mark a port in the normal port
flexview or interface summary flexview, right-click and select "Port
Monitor".

Once the window and port information is shown wait at least 30
seconds (refresh interval) and you will see the same information like at
Cisco's "show interface".

        Hope this helps.

        Kind regards,

        Markus

Just came over from Cisco and we used to be able to do a
"Show Interface" command and see the 5 min average utilization for a
specific port. It was nice to be able to see that. I guess Cisco was
just calculating that for us as it went along.

Does Enterasys do this? Is there a Mib I can hit for a
5 min port utilization average? I don't see it in the CLI so I am
thinking not. I did find the flexview for port utilization but it looks
like it is calculating that after you open the flexview. I would like
to be able to just pull that info up on the fly like when doing the
"show system utilization" command. I don't want to wait 5 min to get
the 5 min average.

What I am doing is creating an ultimate interface
flexview, i.e., one view for all of the port info I am typically looking
for.

                Thanks
