The state of the art in prophecy, indeed.

The foreseeable future means just that. We don't plan on removing the preference to disable signing enforcement for ESR builds based off of 45, and at this point in time I don't see anything currently that would make me think that would change for future releases. I would be lying to you, however, if I said there is no chance that wouldn't change.

We'll continue to watch how signing is used, and may make changes in the future. The ESR builds are maintained specifically for groups that deploy Firefox in a managed environment, and the commitment we've made is to maintain a stable feature set from what's included in the base release, which includes keeping the signing pref that exists in 45. Removing it in a point release would go against the spirit and intent of the ESR builds, especially for a change of that magnitude in managed environments.

I understand that some orgs are required by policy to maintain unsigned add-ons/keep code in-house, and there are no better alternatives that I could consider at this point. I'll also invite anyone who does this to send me feedback directly on what the concerns are for signing them using the API are - I can guess (wrt policy, infosec, etc.), but direct feedback always helps.

"The foreseeable future" means something like "as far into the future as
we can currently predict". If they could foresee a point at which this
option would go away, that point would be in the foreseeable future, so
the statement you quoted would not have been true.

However, they cannot guarantee that they will not eventually decide to
remove this option - for reasons, and therefore at a time, which they
cannot currently foresee - so they cannot (honestly) promise that the
option will never go away.

Ideally, I would like to see this option remain in all future ESR
releases

I agree (barring some better solution, which might include dropping the
whole idea), and it very likely will. The state of the art in prophecy
being what it is, however, no one can safely guarantee that.
