autoConfig works on Thunderbird, and the code I wrote here that uses profile-after-change:
https://mike.kaply.com/2015/02/10/installing-certificates-into-firefox/ should work on Thunderbird. If it were me, i would just use autoconfig. What specific tweaks? Also, as a side note, there is a separate thunderbird enterprise discussion group (although I'm not a part of that).
