Carlos,
Firefox has "geo specific defaults" for the search engines that use
different lists depending on which country the browser detects it is in.
These defaults will override your setting, so you have to turn the feature
off.
These are the autoconfig lines I had to use to get it to work:
defaultPref("browser.search.defaultenginename", "Google");
defaultPref("browser.search.geoSpecificDefaults", false);
