It *is* selecting the next message chronologically.

One More Thing: 

This behaviour of course doesn't occur when the message deleted is the most 
recent and thus at the top of the list; if the message is topmost Entourage 
auto-selects the following message in the list as expected. And I don't mean

to imply that the the message's status as read or unread affects the 
behaviour. Entourage selects the preceding message regardless of the 
messages' state (yes, it does it if deleting multiple messages, contiguous 
or not ) as long as there IS a preceding message in the list.
