We've noticed a problem displaying email in Japanese. It was uncovered as
part of a migration of some users to Exchange as an email server (but using
Entourage as the Mac client). Email using the old (Unix) email server was
7bit encoded using JIS (New). Email from the Exchange server is in
Shift-JIS. In both cases
Content-Type: text/plain;
charset="iso-2022-jp"
Entourage is set to Format-Character Set->Automatic when looking at these
messages.
Both Japanese encodings should be fine but...
JIS (New) 7bit encoded email displays just fine.
The body of the Shift-JIS encoded email is not displayed at all. Just an
empty window. If the user manually selects Format->Character
Set->Japanese(Auto-Select) then the text is displayed. So it seems Entourage
is not properly detecting the email encoding.
If you set Entourage to have Japanese (Auto-Detect) as the default (using
Mail & News preference->Read), the mail is *not* displayed correctly. I.e.
selecting Japanese (Auto-detect) only works if done manually. I believe this
situation occurs because the preference only applies to email that does not
specify the content type. The email from Exchange does specify the content
type.
We've fiddled around with settings in Entourage quite a bit and haven't
found a solution (other than the user having to manually select Japanese
every time they look at a message from Exchange). I looked in the archive
for this list and haven't found any mention of this sort of problem.
It happens on a number of Macs. All running OS 9.0.4. Exchange is version
5.5.
Any solutions known?
Thanks,
Ron
