Definitely. Word 5.1 recognizes it, and it came out in 1992 I believe. It
had been around some time before that.

Probably because RTF was a format developed by Microsoft. It has been a
nearly universally recognized format for word-processing software. Even
AppleWorks will read an RTF file.
