I sent the message below on 11/8/2000 and several astute readers alerted me that my type 2 errors were probably the result of a corrupt rule. sure enough, unchecking all my rules (I have about 10) allowed me to check mail without crashing.
well, the type 2 crashes are back. even after isolating (what I thought was) the corrupt rule, deleting and re-creating it I cannot POP more than about a dozen emails without crashing. I even turned off all of my rules and rebuilt the Entourage database (and followed all of the usual troubleshooting techniques below) to no avail.
the only other variable that I can think of was the large amount of email that I was trying to POP. I had not checked email at all over the weekend until late sunday night. I had about 300 or so emails waiting, and Entourage would POP 10-20 of them and then promptly barf forcing a restart. sheesh.
I cannot imagine that this type of email volume would crash Entourge, but I am just taking a shot in the dark. Needless to say I am completely frustrated with Entourage after spending a month migrating from Eudora and the Now contact suite. I cannot stay with a program that is going to crap out on me once a week, email is my life and I need it to be rock solid. :(
Oh well, back to eudora 5 for now...

I need your help.
I apologize if this has already been covered here (I am new to the list), but regrettably I can no longer check mail using entourage. when I begin sending and receiving mail for my 2 POP accounts, entourage will POP 2 or 3 pieces of mail, then immediately crash with a type 3 error.
this happened to me once last week, but I launched eudora 5 and POPed the mail successfully, so I attributed the crash to a corrupt email attachment. I should also note that I send and receive a high volume of email but I have been using entourage (without issue) for almost 2 months.
I tried this “fix” (POPing email with eudora, then switching back) again last night, but I have not been able to check mail in entourage without having that nasty type 3 error crash the whole program.
what I have tried (in no particular order) to remedy the crash:
_ “typical” rebuild of the entourage db
_ “advanced” rebuild of the entourage db
_ increase memory allocation to entourage (from 11 MB to 24, 36 and 50 MB)
_ deleted hundreds of messages from “deleted items”
_ archived hundreds of messages saved in “sent items”
_ rebuild desktop
_ zap PRAM
_ dozens of restarts with varying extension sets (Mac OS 904 Base, 904 all, etc.)
_ total re-install of office 2001
none of the above has solved the problem.
has anyone else had this problem?
is entourage up to the task of dealing with a large volume of email and contacts?
