The best and most thorough book is Danny Goodman's AppleScript Handbook, 2nd
Edition. You can't usually get it from normal bookstores (it's a "print on
demand" book), but you can get it from the publisher, toExcel, or at
http://www.amazon.com.
It's a little out-of-date but that doesn't matter much. Make sure you get
the pdf downloads of the AppleScript Language Guide, the Finder Guide and
the Scripting Additions Guide (this one is also out-of-date), which are all
free at Apple's AppleScript web site. They are the most thorough of all, but
rather hard to read right through - use them as reference. There are good
simple tutorials to start with while waiting for the Goodman book to arrive
(7-10 days), by downloading and installing the AppleScript Guidebook modules
on Apple's site and learning the simpler ones (forget Program Linking via IP
for the time being), and follow the link on the Apple site to Bill Briggs'
tutorials. You can also try the MacScripter Magazine at
http://macscripter.net.
