A (somewhat silly but effective) work-around:
Open the calendar in a new window. Move this new window over the three-pane
window and size it so that it covers exactly the right part of the
underlying three-pane window (i.e., only the folder pane remains visible).
Now if you click on any folder, the calendar window goes behind and you have
access to the three-pane view to read mail, etc. If you want the calendar
view, *double*click on the calendar item in the folder list and your
calendar window pops up.
