Well you can thank Apple for that. Had there not been an OS X release and so
much pressure to release a version of Mac Office for OS X we would have
released the "next" version of Office on our usual 18 month development
cycle. Instead, we are busting our buts to get a version out as soon as
humanely possible, which results in about a year after we released the OS 9
version. We know that customers will want to use OS X soon after it ships
and will want a native version of Office to go with it.
OS X is no free lunch. It's is very expensive and time consuming to bring a
suite like Office to X. In many ways it is as significant a task for us as
developing Office 2001. Adobe will likely charge a similar upgrade as well.
