According to the news item, "The software will be ready in the fall, and
upgrades from previous versions (including Office 2001) will be $299. For a
limited time, users who purchase Office 2001 will be able to upgrade for
$149."
I read this as: Nnew users who purchase Office 2001 during a limited period
of time not yet specified will get it for $149, but all existing Office
2001 users will pay $299 to run Office natively under OS X, or a total
Office 98 --> Office 2001 Carbon upgrade cost of something over $600 with
applicable tax and shipping. For $100, I'd upgrade from Office 2001 Classic
to Office 2001 Carbon. For $149, I'll balk. For $299 I'll look into
alternatives to the upgrade, including staying in Classic or alternatives
to Office. For what's become primarily a home product, it's become mighty
expensive. I hope MS will reconsider.
