Linux <http://www.Linux.org/> is an open source version of UNIX worked on by
hundreds to thousands of people, mostly in their spare time, and is also
resold in a productized form with software support by several companies.

FreeBSD <http://www.FreeBSD.org/> is an open source version of UNIX worked
on by scores to hundreds of people, mostly in their spare time, and is also
resold in a productized form with software support by several companies.

NetBSD <http://www.NetBSD.org/> is an open source version of UNIX worked on
by hundreds to thousands of people, mostly in their spare time, and is also
resold in a productized form with software support by several companies.

Did that clear things up?

How about this

Once upon a time, AT&T owned all the rights to UNIX and you had to pay a
huge license fee to have access to it.

Eventually, Berkeley took it upon themselves to being rewriting all of the
UNIX operating system without using AT&T code (I'm skipping several dozen
steps). This became Berkeley Software Distribution (BSD). BSD UNIX has
been until continuous development since circa 1975.

Linux was originally written as a hobby, starting in 1991 until its first
"full release" in 1994. Eventually it was open sourced and it became the
hobbyists OS of choice.

Arguably, the core of BSD has a much better design, is substantially more
portable, and allows for a multitude of extensions to its operation that
would be substantially more challenging under Linux.

PS: And we've skipped over all the NextStep, Copland, Rhapsody, and Mach
issues... ;-)
