A large amount of project history and knowledge resides in various archives
of messages and web pages. These may have been created by myself or others
on Windows (3.1, 95, and 98) and Macintosh systems via Internet Explorer
saved as single pages or as Web Archives, Outlook, Microsoft Mail, Netscape,
Act, etc. These can be in surprising formats - for example Windows IE saves
single web pages as Outlook mail messages that are compatible with
Entourage.
As these files contain critical records of communications, understandings,
and reasons why things were done, it is important that they be maintained
with correct type and creator information in File Exchange.
I wont go into the IT department's practices, but suffice it to say that I
am the only person with a system that is backed up on any kind of basis, and
on a number of occasions the only copy of critical documentation or
correspondence has ended up on a backup I made of a section of a Windows NT
server via Retrospect.
If I manage to recover a document or mail message via Entourage, and need to
transfer it back to a departmental server, I would like File Exchange to
give me a little help.
In the future, I may need to move my Entourage files to an NT system - if
so, I want it to go with a file extension that would allow Windows to do
something intelligent with it (or at least not do something stupid to it),
and allow me to get it back with the right Mac type and creator codes.
