Steve Friesen sent me a real solution:

Drag the messages to the desktop, then back into the folder. They are
recalculated. then this is all that's left to do:  The "originals" are still
selected; click Delete and they're all deleted at once. Then either select
the new ones and Mark as Read, or just Marl All as Read in the folder.
