Don't forget that OS X has a "Classic" mode (OS 9.1+). For the first 6-8
months, probably the only email app available in OS X mode will be the
primitive default Apple email app. So most people will go on doing email
from Classic, using whichever app they're presently using.
Then, I would guess that Eudora, which doesn't have to worry about things
like improving calendar, tasks notes and integrating with sister apps (viz.
Word. Excel) as Entourage does, will be fairly quick to present a carbonized
version for OS X. Maybe some others, too, like MailSmith.
Then Entourage, along with the rest of Office, will hit the OS X screens
sometime in the fall. After that, who knows? Maybe MS will have time to
carbonize OE if they feel it serves any purpose. It's possible that they may
still think that it helps get new Mac users into the MS mode. But since
Apple will have its own default email app, and therefore are unlikely to
reintroduce OE as the default email app, I agree that that's unlikely. My
guess is that somewhere around a year after Office for OS X is introduced
(maybe summer 2002), the various Office apps may become available
separately. So if you can wait until then, using OE in Classic while the
bugs are worked out and after, you might be able to get Entourage for X (or
OS 11) on its own. Otherwise, I suppose you'll have to consider Eudora if it
comes out sooner.
I think that if MS starts to lose former OE users to Eudora in a big way,
they'll come out with a self-standing Entourage sooner than that. But most
people will want Word + Entourage anyway, so I'm sure that there will always
be a big incentive for most people (not you, it seems) to get the whole
Office package. I'm sure that will always be cheaper.
