McEditors and Entourage users:

In response to my query about receiving attachments as they were sent, Diane
L. Schirf suggested I use the freeware utility "TNEF's enough." I did, and
it works correctly -- with one problem. The files that were sent
uncompressed became plain-text files on conversion, and the intended
application (InDesign) did not recognize them. The one that was first
compressed with DropStuff, however, came out perfectly. (I had to unstuff it
after running it through TNEF's Enough.)

Meanwhile, Chuck Brandstater and Remo Del Bello gave helpful advice on
changing the settings of the sending e-mail client (Outlook). The format
that has given me such trouble is apparently called "Microsoft Outlook Rich
Text" -- which carries the fitting initials MORT. I'll suggest that my
colleague check through everything in the Tools menu to find this setting,
and change it to anything else.

Danièle Laruelle mentioned the possibility that the sender is using a
modified version of Outlook, which sounds possible because, as far as I
knew, Outlook (not Express) was not available for the Mac. Geoff Hart
suggested I check tidBITS for discussion of the topic, but the search
functions didn't like any of the terms I used, so that option will be out of
reach until I hear back from Adam Engst.

Patsy Price shared an interesting story that may be related. She'd had to
send Mac files to another Mac through a Windows machine because the Mac,
which was on a network, didn't send them correctly. Although she didn't say
which e-mail client was on the sending Mac, I gather it was the same as my
colleague is using (also on a network).

Thanks to all for their help -- especially Diane and Remo, who both told me
about TNEF's Enough.
