Yeah, many solutions assume you already own something like FileMaker. But I
think Dan Crevier's FileMaker/Applescript combo is available with a run-time
version of FileMaker. It's a very neat way to archive.

EEA (the shareware Entourage archiver) works well for both text file
solutions and FileMaker. I've done it both ways. When you use the text file
option, it saves a hierarchy of folders that match your message folders,
with text files inside (text editor of your choice). The best way to use
this is to create a disk image (make it large enough that Sherlock will let
you index it), do the archive, and allow Sherlock to index it. Then when you
want to search, just tell Sherlock (or whatever shareware searching program
you use; if you have BBEdit it does a really fine job of searching in
multiple files) to index the volume. You can then do content searches really
fast.
As Paul Berkowitz mentioned, if you're affiliated with a university or
school, getting a database like FileMaker may be another option. Or, ACIUS
sells 4D to educators for $40 -- a heck of a deal. It's pretty easy to roll
your own database and then use something like EEA to output a tab delimited
file, import it, and voila.
