Try using the Nickname field.  Autofill works on the nickname field.

Thanks for the tips, Dan. I was talking about something different, though. Autofill does indeed work on the nickname field when composing a message, but I was talking about the following process:

  1. Hit cmd-2 to bring up the address book
  2. Type the first few Roman letters of the contact’s last name (of a Japanese contact whose Japanese name is stored in the “Last Name” field, and whose Romanized name is stored in the “Nickname” field.)
  3. The expectation is that the contact’s name be instantly highlighted.

This doesn’t work on my set-up. I suppose that for now I’ll take Jeremy’s advice and continue doing what I have been doing (i.e., using the last and first name fields for Roman characters and using the nickname field for the kanji). Not an ideal solution, but one that will work for now.
