My original list was in an Excel spreadsheet. My first attempt was to go
directly from Excel. However Excel apparently cannot save non-English text
into a regular text tile, but only a Unicode text file, which cannot be read
by the Entourage import contacts wizard.
What I did was import the data from Excel into Word as a table and convert
the table to text (alternatively, you can import as unformatted text). I
then saved the word file as text. That file contains the Japanese text
without damage, and can be imported into Entourage.
Note that Excel, Word, and Entourage are all registered as Japanese
applications. This is critical to making Japanese text handling work.
