Where is your sense of fun?
"Return Receipt" should always be enabled, especially when you're sending a
message to a mailing list with thousands and thousands of users.
That way you get thousands of thousands of email addresses back. And can
automatically add them to your list of "known good email addresses" that you
sell to spammers.
In fact, I've a new business plan. Write a Visual Basic virus that harvests
email addresses by sending itself to everyone in someone's address book and
setting the return receipt to a compromised server so you can harvest the
addresses and send them spam (from an officially unaffiliated offshore third
party) offering to sell them anti-virus software. It's brilliant! ;-)
Heck, let's just tweak the virus to harvest a credit card number and order
the software for them. ;-)
#####
In all seriousness, I loath Return Receipts.
Partially because the behavior is completely random. Partially because I
read messages quickly upon receiving them and file them for follow-up
depending upon *my* priorities *not* the priority of the sender (and the
senders invariably call me 90 seconds after getting a "Return Receipt" to
make sure that I got the message...but perhaps that just indicates something
about the mental state of the people who send me messages with return
receipts requested). Partially because it reveals information about my
server setup, my current location, and other tidbits of data that I don't
necessarily want revealed to any random person who sends me email.
So if E'rage ever implements some sort of official support the one feature
that I want is a single checkbox that says "Never generate a Return
Receipt".
