Just a couple of warnings about file sharing. First, the file sharing
control panel isn't all you need to set up properly. You also need to go to
the icon for the hard disc you want to share and do "get info" and then
"sharing" and set it to allow sharing. Also, your Appletalk panel needs to
be set to ethernet. Then go to the chooser and select Apple Share and click
on whichever computer you want to use as a file server. I *think* that after
getting everything set up, you may need to do a restart (I haven't figured
out why, just know that last night when I was moving things to *my* new
computer, I thought I had done everything right for file sharing and still
when I opened both choosers and clicked on AppleShare, no available servers
showed up. Then when I happened to do a restart on the new computer, because
I had installed something from a CD, all at once that computer showed up as
a file server.

I certainly agree that once file sharing is working properly, it's the
easiest way to transfer from one computer to another. Maybe it's me, but it
seems to me that every time I go about setting it up *something* causes a
problem and I tear my hair out for awhile before remembering to do
everything. I suspect that the sharing adjustment in the get info window for
the hard drive is something that came in with OS 9, because the last time I
was moving files, to a computer with 8.6, I remember that I could get to
that computer's hard disk from the computer running OS 9, but couldn't get
to the OS 9 computer's hard disk from the other one - bet I hadn't allowed
file sharing in the get info window.

And since I'm writing, thanks to everyone for the original advice about this
move - it's been an amazingly smooth one, and it was really neat to open
Entourage for the first time and find all my emails and contacts and
calendar entries there!
