Sounds similar to a problem that *I* just had, except that the problem I had
was actually a disk failure of some kind, causing a trashing of a portion of
the Database file.

Unfortunately, because of the loss of the Database file, the messages in my
Messages file are gone if I do any kind of rebuild. I've managed to extract
all of the messages into a series of MBOX files (a single MBOX file import
*missed* quite a few messages). I also recovered many of my notes and
address book entries, but with portions of the database zeroed (zeroing the
portions of the database file that were unreadable) I get an instant error
after selecting that identity.
