I was seeing some issues with incoming messages screwing up the listing, so
I turned off Live Sync and it's much better (because I can control better
when new messages get looked at). I didn't notice any significant
performance issue with IMAP over 2001, and in general it seems quite spiffy.

Where I've seen some delays is when I open up a connection. Today,
coincidentally, I did some snooping, and what was going on was that the
imapd was initializing the connection, and one thing it does is purge old
messages out of the trash. If your trash grows large (as this one had), it
can take some time. Unfortunately, entourage doesn't give you an idea what's
going on (other than "opening connection"), because the server doesn't.

I'm using Courier Imap, FWIW.
