I'm sure that 99.9% of people want to know about errors and not ignore them. That's why the icon bounces for errors even if you turn it off for new messages (which a very large proportion number of people do not want - the badging suits them well - but the option is there for those who do). Honestly, if you really want to ignore errors, maybe hide the dock?
