Over the weekend, this computer (the Blue and White G3 upgraded to a G4 
500) crashed hard and permanently while I was using Mac OS 9. Since it 
wouldn't boot at all (and since I had a recent backup), I dug up an 
Apple Developer CD with the full install of 10.1 on it, reformatted the 
drive, and reinstalled X from scratch.

Since then, everything has been dramatically faster, and quite nice. I 
haven't been able to try Office v.X yet, since I'll have to install Mac 
OS 9, then Office 2001, then Office v.X Upgrade (I'll do that tomorrow), 
but I'm hopeful that I'll see the same speed increase in Office as I've 
seen everywhere else.

Then I can ditch my Office 2001 files altogether, thus solving the 
original problem for which I started this thread. Wish me luck... :)
