If you don't want Office 2001 on your machine, you don't need to install it just to install the Office V.X upgrade. After dragging the Office V.X folder to your hard drive, double click on an Office app. Somewhere (I forget if it's before or after entering your CD key) the installer will say something about looking for your previous Office version. You can then just insert your 2001 CD and browse down into the "Microsoft Office 2001" folder. The installer will see your previous version and finish the install.
