Sounds like a problem with Compuserve. Do they need some kind of
authentication to access the smtp server? Check your account settings for
this to see if you find anywere to turn it on. Are you connected using
Compuserve when this happens? Maybe they do not allow you to use their smtp
server if you are not connected to the internet through compuserve.
