The current US Messenger does not handle Japanese very well. I believe the Japanese version of Office has a Japanese localized Messenger that does work with Japanese (but I could be wrong). I didn't see it up yet, but keep an eye on <http://www.microsoft.com/japan/mac/default.asp>. We realize that the international support in Messenger is weak right now, and fixing that is a priority. BTW, the Japanese Office is out now.
