Richard,

Many people do not like HTML mail (formatted text, various sizes, fonts,
colors, and so on), especially on mailing lists. The person who wrote you
routinely deletes such mail without reading it. I advise you, and everyone,
to make "plain text" your default, and to use HTML only when you really need
it--as I do, when I send a script to the list.

You can set your mail format to plain text in "Mail & News Preferences" on
the "Compose" tab. There are popups you can select from in the middle of the
pane.
