I know it's not "standard equipment" on these platforms, but there are
versions of StuffIt Expander for several platforms, including Windows and
Linux. The expanders are free downloads at
<http://www.stuffit.com/expander/index.html>
Additionally, there are several shareware utilities that will create .zip
files. Files will need to be compressed before attaching to an email. I
can't testify as to the quality or cross-platform compatibility of these.
You may want to check VersionTracker for evaluations.

SmartZip <http://www.vampiresoft.com/Products/MacOS/SmartZip.html>

DropZipper <http://homepage.mac.com/TomDar2/software.html>
DropZip (Aladdin) <http://www.stuffit.com/stuffit/lite/index.html>
In circumstances where you may be sending large files that would gain more
benefit from compression, one of these may be a helpful additions.
