I have a very similar View. And while I don't have the answer about the refresh rate, I can say that I used to use the 'Refresh Message List' (Cmd-L) command to clear out the read items. "Used to", because with Entourage vX that key command doesn't seem to work on my Unread View. I have to go to another view and then go back, then the read messages fall off the view.
