I have a pair of scripts that help, although it still takes time and human
intervention. One script, "Duplicates Report", will create a report of all
duplicates (simple match of name and E-mail address), and also optionally
will assign the category "Duplicate" to each of them.

Then, you select all the category "Duplicate" contacts in the Address Book
and sort by name. You'll see a list of matched pairs. Select one pair, and
run the second script: "Merge Contacts". This takes the two contacts, merges
the information in them, and then flags one of them for deletion.

When you are done processing pairs, you can delete all the flagged ones.

If you are certain that any duplicates are total duplicates, that is, no
need to merge any data from one set to the other, you could just select
every other contact in the list of duplicates and hit the Delete key.

Scripts can be found at AppleScript Central, or on my scripts site in the
Contacts subfolder:
<http:[EMAIL PROTECTED]/Entourage%20v%20
X/Contacts/>

You'll find the Duplicates Report script in the "Lookup/Use" folder and the
merge script in the "Modify" folder.

In my opinion, the best way is John Carlsen's shareware package, eMessage
Archiver. See details at:
<http://www.versiontracker.com/moreinfo.fcgi?id=11969&db=mac>

You can also archive by drag and drop, just dragging folders to the desktop.
Barry W recently posted a script to archive all your folders at once in this
way. (Does not select only recent messages; archives everything in the
folder.)
