For me, I've never been able to avoid getting mistranslated quote characters, no matter what I do. The solution has been to write a little script that translates PC characters into Mac ones.
Here is "Fix PC Quotes" (and a few other characters):
That's only if you see the errors. In that case it's a lot easier to use the Satimage osax (available as a standalone in both OS X and 8/9, different version):
convert Windows to Mac "some string"
(Be careful not to use it on empty "" strings though - it crashes!)
