I'm sorry, Eric, but I have done it. As i tried to say before I was
"corrected", it's essential when _reading_ Japanese to say 'as Unicode
text', before you ever bring it to Entourage. According to Dan, you also
have to do it when setting the properties in Entourage, but I recall it
differently.

I suggest using variables:

    set whatever to "デッえ医" as Unicode text
    tell application "Microsoft Entourage" to set first name of contact id
78 to whatever -- as Unicode text [if necessary]

Not checked now, but some time ago I got it to work.
