Entourage sends all HTML mail as "multipart/alternative" and always has
done. That means that if the recipient has an email reader that doesn't read
HTML e.g. Claris Emailer on the Mac, Outlook 97 on Windows) it will appear
there in plaintext, no tags.

So I can't see that there's any harm in sending HTML messages to
individuals. Of course, if your formatting is garish or tasteless, people
won't like it.

The resolution of fonts is different on the Mac and PC. That's why so many
HTML or rich-text messages, as sent by Window users, look so tiny on our
Macs. They will usually send in 10-pt. which may even appear here as 9-pt.
Tiny. Because 10-pt on Windows looks like 12-pt on Mac. So if you're sending
a normal-looking 12-pt. font, it will be huge, Gargantuan on a Windows email
reader. It will look like 16-pt or so does to us, or 14-pt. anyway, like the
complex HTML messages that come from Yahoo groups. Do you really want that?

Otherwise, the points George makes about mailing lists hold true. But you
can send HTML to this list OK, I think.

! I don't think many people use it as the _sole_ criterion, but there may be
a few other people just like you.

You can't really go wrong with plain text.
