I just did a major clean-out of my Entourage and afterwards I tried to compact the files, however when I hold down the option key and start Entourage I get an error message that tells me to quit all Microsoft programs before I can begin.  I do not have any other MS programs open – or any other programs open, for that matter.  I even shut my computer down completely and then tried again.

Does anyone have any suggestions?  Thanks for your help.

You haven't told us which version of Entourage, but it's evidently 2001. You haven't upgraded to SR-1 for 2001, available at MacTopia (18 months old), have you? I think the error message is clearer on SR-1, but maybe I'm wrong. You have Office Reminders still open. Go to the Microsoft Office module on your control strip at the bottom of your screen. (If it's not there, go to Apple menu/Control panels. Control Strip, turn it on and make it visible). Click on it, and Turn Reminders Off. Then you be able to rebuild. But first update Office 2001 to SR-1 by downloading the file from MacTopia. It's the 2001 SR-1 you want, not the Office X SR-1.  It will do a much better rebuild than pre-SR 1. That's why you should upgrade first, if you haven't already.
