You may be right that such problems can happen during the restore. But
careful reading of the original post shows that the "backup" copies of the
Entourage "database" file contained 0 bytes. I presume that, even if Office
Notifications were "off" during the restore, the restore would fail!

I've said it before, and I'll say it again - I prefer to entrust my data to
a commercial utility with a good track record such as Retrospect, rather
than rely on a freeware or shareware utility. Yes, I have bought lots of
shareware in my many years of Mac & PC use. Yes, I'll continue to support
shareware. But when my hard drive dies and I rely upon backup software to
get me back up and running, I feel it's worth paying for the peace of mind.

I have created full-system backups with Retrospect, and have used them to
restore an OS X system - including the Entourage Database. I experienced no
problems with the database after the restore, and I am confident that Office
Notifications were running during the backup process (but not during the
restore).
