I dunno. Sounds as though something besides Entourage had the database open.
It could be Word (the contacts) or Office Notifications. Did you actually
try quitting all Office applications as instructed, including the Database
Daemon? (In Entourage, the Entourage menu, select "Turn off Office
Notifications".) Quit Entourage, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Try the
conduit.

Renaming the database and creating a new one will "fix" the problem because
it creates a file that isn't open by any app except Entourage. But it isn't
what you want, obviously....
