There is an old proxy protocol that is referred to as "tunnel".  Older
unix proxy servers support it.  However, Socks is more the standard
proxy protocol to use when wanting mail protocols to go through a proxy
server.

Go to 'Mail & News Preferences' --> 'Proxies'

If you check 'Mail or 'Secure', you have a pop-up panel that allows you
to
select the use of 'SOCKS' or 'TUNNEL' proxy support.

I'm referring to the 'Tunnel' support, and what it's based on (there's a
proprietary MS protocol called PPTP Tunnel, which it might be, but not
sure
- hence my query).
