I have no anti-virus software on my machine at all, and I'm not very
concerned. But I wish someone would come out with a good package for OS X. I
can't help remembering that at various times, email programs for Windows --
notably, but not exclusively, Microsoft Outlook -- have been vulnerable to
infection WITHOUT the user opening an attachment. Merely reading the
message, or, worse, merely receiving it, was enough. There are also threats
that attack PCs directly through their network connections (Code Red, Nimda,
Bugbear). Since I don't understand OS X nearly as well as I understood OS 9,
I am less comfortable leaving myself vulnerable to such attacks. They don't
exist today, but may in the future. For all we know, Microsoft Entourage has
a gaping security hole someone has just discovered and is preparing to
exploit in an attack.
